I like using Phrygian with a Minor Third AND Major Third too. 8 Notes allowed. Try this: III, iii, ii, I. (III, III, III, III, iii, iii, iii, iii, ii, ii, ii, ii, I, I, I, I) loop Also, Start at the Top and Slur all the way down. & Slur all the way resolving up.

Barry called it playing the 6th on the 5th. For that AbMaj chord the 5th (of Ab) would be Eb. So Eb6 and it’s related diminshed chord would be where you can draw some movements from. So on any major chord (Ab in this case) you can use the 6th diminshed scale of chords built on the 5th ( Eb6 and F dim) or on the 1 (Ab6 and Bbdim). Love what you doing. Keep it up.

If you know one key you know three. A little theory goes a long way. Circle of fifths and fourths. G is a fifth of C. F is a fourth of C. Learning the circle of fourths helped me also practicing songs in their original key without transposing. Hymns too.

You provide a refreshing and interesting take on this. I'm a guitar player trying to use your ideas on guitar. So, you are playing in the key of C. You "borrow" the E7b9/G# 3 chord and use its R, 3rd, 4th 5th, b7 then add the b9 and b6 correct? This is the E phrygian dominant scale correct? You resolve this to the 6 chord A minor correct? Does this only work well when resolving to a minor chord or can you still get back to C major?
